This article is based on a conversation with my Grandma about the LGBTQIA+ community . It made me think about how we often just chide people for not knowing the proper terminology. But you can’t blame the boomers completely! Knowledge is out there but it is often confusing and overwhelming. Let’s take my Grandma as an example.

She works in a bakery, and there she happened to meet someone who had begun their transition. And from what I understood from the conversation with my Grandma, this person identified as male so I will address them as such in this article.

He was my Grandma’s colleague and she often didn’t know how to address him or act around him. And he was so patient and formed a rapport with my Grandma. He was always at ease when having a conversation with her. Even though my poor Catholic Grandma was very confused with the terminology and often made not so politically correct jokes to hide her awkwardness.

But this inspired her to ask me about terminology and the various sexualities. I have always been part of LGBTQ discourse online so while I was confident to answer most of her questions. I realized there were some parts where I couldn’t answer her either so with a lot of help from the internet, twitter friends and LGBTQ friends I have compiled a guide to LGBTQIA for the people who aren’t trying to be judgmental but need help understanding the various terminologies and sexualities.

Welcome to the A-Z of the various terminologies associated with LGBTQIA+

Asexuality: A person identifies as an asexual when they don’t experience any sexual attraction and do not wish to engage in sexual intercourse.

This is a good website to understand if you are asexual or not: https://www.asexuality.org

Aromantic: A person who doesn’t experience romantic attraction to other people.

People could be aromantic and asexual or only aromantic or only asexual.

Bisexuality: A person who is attracted to more than one gender. Some people who identify as bisexual are attracted to both men and women.

Fictional Characters that are bisexual are Rosa from Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Callie Torres from Greys Anatomy

A Website for resources: www.bisexualindex.org

Bicurious: A person who is attracted to one gender but is trying to understand whether they are attracted to other genders as well.

People who identify as bicurious do not necessarily identify as bisexual. They can go on to identify as various other sexualities such as gay, lesbian, pan and even straight in some cases.

Cisgender : Cisgender are people who identify as the same gender as their biological sex.

Demisexual: Demisexual is a sexuality where a person does not experience sexual attraction to someone unless they connect with them emotionally.

Drag Queen/ King: Someone who portrays another gender theatrically may not necessarily identify as that gender.

A drag queen/ king are people who usually dress up as the other gender to perform shows or just for fun. The person may not be a transgender and may not identify as a transgender. Here’s a video below from Drag Queens and Kings about offensive questions they receive.

BBC Three

FTM/F2M: This is short for someone who is transitioning from female to male. When someone who was biologically female is transitioning so they can identify as male.

Yawara Chatora is an example of a F2M. He’s from the very popular anime My Hero Academia.

Gender Dysphoria: This is a state of discomfort that occurs for people who are uncomfortable with their biological sex. They feel more comfortable in clothes of the other gender. They also like to be identified as the other gender.

The movie Danish Girl is a good movie to offer insight into gender dysphoria and help you have an initial understanding.

Gay: This term is usually used for someone who identifies as male who is attracted to other males

Here is a feel good video of older men who are gay enjoying themselves and spilling the damn TEA.

Heterosexual: This a sexuality that describes someone who is attracted to the opposite sex. People who are hetero sexual usually identify as straight.

Homosexual: This is a general term (often considered a bit offensive) for people who are attracted to the same gender. Most people prefer the use of the words- gay, queer, lesbian and unlabeled.

These are the two terms most people know and understand but just for fun. I thought I would list some famous characters who identify as heterosexual and some who identify as a lesbian/gay.

Heterosexual: Joey Tribbiani and Chandler Bing

Intersex: Intersex is a general term used to define someone who was born with reproductive organs that do not fit typical definitions of either male or female.

MTF/ M2F: This a term to indicate that a person who was biologically male is transforming to a female.

This is a character called Sophia from OITNB about her transition from a biological male to a female. This also touches a little about gender dysphoria and gives insight into one percent about what someone who identifies as transgender goes through.

This is the part one of our Guide. Please do let us know about any feedback if you have. If there any additional sexualities that we missed out. This Guide is to help educate people on the various terminologies. It was mostly gathered from the internet and people we know. We would love to hear input from anyone on how to improve on it.

Thank you!

Also please do comment down below any terms you learnt that may not be in the guide!
